May 2001
Every
May, A Fistful of Soundtracks has something major up its sleeve.
In 1998, May was dubbed "Batmay," and each show that month mixed
music from the Batman movies and animated series with interviews
with the crew from the critically acclaimed cartoon. In 1999, we had "May
the Force Be with You May," a month of Star Wars-related treats
(though The Phantom
Menace blew, the anticipation was
a bit fun). Then last year, May on Fistful was "X-May,"
in which we heard music from comic-book movie soundtracks and segments
about one of the most eagerly awaited comic-book movies ever, X-Men.
This
spring, I almost ran out of ideas. We've got that Planet of the Apes
remake from Tim Burton coming up this summer, so I initially thought of
doing "Damn Dirty May," in which I would mix music from the
old Planet of the Apes flicks and other movies involving everyone's
favorite crap-throwing animal (such as King Kong and Mighty
Joe Young) with segments about the new Apes film. Sounds cool,
right? Well, I would have gone through with it, but frankly, there aren't
too many great soundtracks from monkey-related movies, including the Apes
sagas (I only like the ones Jerry Goldsmith wrote), and also, I wanted
to take it easy with the program this May, mainly because of my work at
the newspaper. So I came up with a theme for the May shows that would
still be as interesting as the previous May themes, yet it would also
allow me to do much less work with the program. And I mean much less.
This
May, I'm temporarily relinquishing my duty of picking out the music each
week for Fistful and letting other people do it. (I'll still host
the program, of course. These golden pipes of mine ain't ever tired.)
I want to know what sort of film scores and soundtracks my friends and
colleagues like. Do any of them make mixtapes of John Williams marches?
Are any of them like that weirdo in that recent Saturday Night Live
sketch who finds sitcom theme songs romantic?
During
"Movie Music Mixtape Month" on Fistful, the music will
be chosen by the likes of my friend Necip Mehmet, who occasionally provides
character voices and voiceovers for the program and helped me out with
my transition to digital production last year (click here for a chat between me and Necip about making Fistful),
fellow writer Richard von Busack, the Metro's
beloved longtime film critic, and Robert Emmett, host of The Norman
Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show on KFJC-FM in Los Altos Hills. Richard's
got great musical taste. How do I know this? He didn't pick the love theme
from Armageddon.
