Thoughts of the month and A Fistful of Soundtracks episode previews for August 2001.

Jim Aquino hosts and produces A Fistful of Soundtracks (Sundays 2-4PM on KZSC 88.1 FM in Santa Cruz), writes for Silicon Valley Community Newspapers and Metro Newspapers in San Jose and has noticed a new trend that's a follow-up to the "Butt-Kicking Babes" craze (which has been written about constantly by folks like former Metro colleague Mary Spicuzza): Racial Slur-Spouting Sex Bombs. If Extra did a segment on it, the promo would probably go something like this: "First J-Lo! And now Sarah Silverman! 'Nigga' and 'chink' never sounded so sssssex-ay!"

The wails of August

Ugh. Is it August already? I usually don't like August because it's the least eventful month of the summer — as well as the year — it's the month that signals the end of the summer and the movies that come out this month usually suck (although there are occasional exceptions like The Fugitive, which hit theaters back in August 1993; maybe Ghost World and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back will be exceptions also). I also usually take a break from A Fistful of Soundtracks during August, and I will again, but not before producing new shows like "Fistful on the Run." While trying to brainstorm for ideas for the edition that's set to air August 12, I was choosing selections from the soundtracks to the Tom Tykwer movies Run Lola Run and The Princess and the Warrior for that show's playlist and then noticed that both Lola and Princess had "on the run" plots. Then that inspired me to choose selections from scores to other movies that involve characters who are "on the run" or have the word "run" in the title, like True Romance, The Fugitive, Midnight Run, Chicken Run, Logan's Run and Blade Runner. So the August 12 edition of Fistful will be "Fistful on the Run." I'm not sure if it will be another "Up, Up and Away," but it should be an alright show.

And please, try the Swordfish

Before I go, here are five favorite new kickass tracks that have been (or will be) featured on Fistful this summer and are great for burning onto your latest mixtape CD:
1. Paul Oakenfold & Christopher Young, "Stanley's Theme," Swordfish (London/Sire)
2. Pale 3 featuring Michael Brook, "Opening (Sissi Search)," The Princess and the Warrior (Superb/Trauma)
3. Danny Elfman, "Main Titles," Planet of the Apes (Sony Classical/Sony Music Soundtrax)
4. VRO Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring Heitor Pereira, "Nyah and Ethan (from Mission: Impossible 2)," The Wings of a Film: The Music of Hans Zimmer (Decca)
5. Thievery Corporation, "Il Grande Silencio," Morricone RMX (Reprise)
