Thoughts of the month and
A Fistful of Soundtracks episode
previews for July 2001.

Jim
Aquino hosts and produces A Fistful
of Soundtracks (Sundays 2-4PM on KZSC
88.1 FM in Santa Cruz), writes for the
Metro in San Jose and used to trip about the size
of his ears in this photo, but doesn't worry about it anymore.
You know what they say about guys with big ears...

Yakety lack
If you've been listening to recent editions
of A Fistful of Soundtracks, you'll notice some new ID's
I've created for the program, especially an ID in which I say,
"More soundtracking, less yakking," my version of that
broadcasting cliché, "More rock, less talk."
Lately, I've been trying to reduce the amount of chattering I
do between tracks. Less talk is always nice: even I get sick of
the sound of my own voice too. If people can have surgery to change
their facial features and make their breasts or penises larger,
then is it also possible for surgeons to alter the sound of your
voice? I wish I had a voice like Isaac Hayes's or Barry White's.
Maybe I should try doing a whole show in that kind of voice because
then everything I say would sound sexy. Even a phrase like "And
now, here's a suite from Wing Commander" would make
the ladies go ga-ga.
Come fly with me
So listen for the "More soundtracking,
less yakking" ID, and also, keep your ears peeled for the
"Every good hero should have some" ID, which samples
the "That's my theme music" scene from I'm Gonna
Git You Sucka. I had so much fun with that ID that it inspired
an entire show, "Every Good Hero Should Have Some,"
which will feature heroic themes from films like Shaft,
Foxy Brown, Batman, Once Upon a Time in China
and The Magnificent Seven. Listen closely for that, as
well as "Up, Up and Away," which will center on film
score cues and musical numbers with a flying theme. I was inspired
by a dream set sent to me by Cinematic
Sound host Erik Woods for one of
the Movie Music Mixtape Month shows. He selected several tracks
related to flight, like "The Flying Circus" from The
Rocketeer, "Building the Crate" from Chicken
Run and the main title theme from The Blue Max. "Up,
Up and Away" will feature those tracks, as well as selections
from The Right Stuff, 1941, Superman: The Movie
and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The "You Can Fly!"
number from Disney's Peter Pan will also be included, and
yes, even the Steve Stevens theme from Top Gun will turn
up. I promise I won't do any "You can ride my tail anytime!"
jokes.
